The Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team back on track at Portimao. The SSP300 team prepares to make its debut

Almost a month since the first round in Australia, the Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team readies itself for the second Superbike round and the first Supersport 300 event.

At Phillip Island, SBK riders Tito Rabat and Bahattin Sofuoglu made a very positive debut that showcased both their own potential and that of Sandro Carusi’s team. The experienced Spanish rider had a few technical issues but nevertheless came close to the points zone, while the young Turkish rider finished a strong fifteenth in Race 1. In Portugal, both riders will aim to continue developing their respective bikes and be in the fight for the points zone, harnessing the data collected during the tests that the Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team completed at this same track in late January.

The Autodromo do Algarve will stage the first round of the Supersport 300 World Championship. Riding for the Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSSP300 Team are Australian Cameron Swain and Spaniard Mar Vich. Considered two of the most promising young riders on the international motorcycling landscape, they have everything they need to do well despite this being their debut season.

The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve was inaugurated in October 2008, and has achieved FIM and FIA homologation. It cost roughly 195 million Euro, and hosted its first official event on 2 November 2008, with the final round of the Superbike World Championship. Aside from the track, the facility includes a karting track, a technology park, a 5* hotel, a sports complex and various apartments. A “motorsport city” that spans 300 hectares in all. The track offers 64 different configurations, measures 4.592 km in length and incorporates 15 turns, nine right-handers and six left.

"We’re ready for the second SBK round at Portimao. Our riders have already tested at this circuit and we’re sure that the data collected will help us to be competitive and achieve good results. As for the SSP300, Portimao marks the first round for the series and for our riders, both of whom come from the Yamaha bLU cRU project. I hope to continue supporting young Yamaha riders, just as we have over the last few seasons.”

“I like the Portimao track. During winter testing, even though we weren’t able to ride a lot due to the weather, we collected important data that we will analyse together with that from Phillip Island. For this second round, we have a plan that should allow us to do well in the races. We’re all ready and excited to get back on track after such a long break.”

“Once back from Australia there was Ramadan, but I’ve been able to continue training and so am ready for Portimao. I know the track and I like it, but I’ve never ridden a Superbike there of course. It’s all new for me this year and my only goal is to consistently improve, so at Portimao I’ll be looking to do more than I did in Australia and regularly reach the points zone.”
